Best Places to Visit in Kerala 2025: Ranked Guide
Kerala's best destinations ranked for first-time and repeat visitors, with sample itineraries and honest time allocations.
The Classic Kerala Circuit
Most first-timers do Kochi to Munnar to Thekkady to Alleppey to Varkala. It works, but it is fast. Here is what to prioritise.
1. Alleppey and Kumarakom (2-3 nights)
The backwaters are the one thing Kerala has that nothing else does. One night on a houseboat (Rs 12,000-25,000 all-inclusive) plus one night at a lake resort is the sweet spot.
2. Munnar (2 nights)
Tea gardens, Eravikulam National Park, Mattupetty Dam. Cool, misty, romantic. Skip if visiting in December if you hate crowds.
3. Fort Kochi (2 nights)
Chinese fishing nets, Jew Town, Paradesi Synagogue, Kathakali at Kerala Kathakali Centre (Rs 350). Walkable, cafes, best food scene in Kerala.
4. Wayanad (2 nights)
Edakkal Caves, Banasura Sagar Dam, Chembra Peak heart-shaped lake trek. Better than Munnar for families with teens.
5. Varkala (2 nights)
Cliff beach, cheaper than Kovalam, better cafes. North Cliff is backpacker zone, south is quieter.
6. Thekkady / Periyar (1-2 nights)
Bamboo rafting and boat safari on Periyar Lake. Wildlife sightings are hit-or-miss.
Under-Rated
- Kannur — Theyyam ritual performances, uncrowded beaches.
- Bekal — fort and quiet beach.
- Athirapally Falls — Kerala's Niagara, good day trip from Kochi.
