Ladakh bike trip guide (2025)

The Manali-Leh highway is India's most iconic motorcycle journey. At altitudes crossing 5,300 metres (Khardung La), through terrain unlike anywhere else in Asia, this is a bucket-list trip for millions of Indian bikers. Here's everything you need to plan it safely and economically.

Best time to visit

Late June to mid-September: The only viable window for the Manali-Leh highway (open typically June 15 – October 15, weather-dependent). July is monsoon season — risk of landslides on Manali-Leh. August and early September are peak season — roads are best, accommodation easily available. Late August to early September is the sweet spot.

Routes

Manali to Leh (475 km, 2–3 days): The most adventurous route. Crosses Rohtang La (3,978 m), Baralacha La (4,892 m), Nakee La, Lachulung La, and Tanglang La (5,328 m). Stunning but physically demanding. Day 1: Manali to Jispa/Keylong (120 km). Day 2: Keylong to Pang (150 km). Day 3: Pang to Leh (175 km).

Srinagar to Leh (422 km, 2 days): Easier, paved throughout, and through Kashmir's beautiful mountains. Crosses Zoji La (3,528 m) and Fotu La (4,108 m). Day 1: Srinagar to Kargil. Day 2: Kargil to Leh.

Permits required

Inner Line Permit (ILP) required for Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso, and Tso Moriri — non-Indian nationals need Protected Area Permit (PAP). ILP can be obtained online (lahdcleh.nic.in) or in Leh city. ₹200 per day per person approximately. Carry ID proof (Aadhaar/passport).

Best bikes for Ladakh

Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 is the most recommended — purpose-built for Himalayan terrain, adequate power at altitude, comfortable ergonomics. Alternatively: RE Classic/Thunderbird (heavier but manageable), Honda CB500X (for experienced riders). Minimum 350cc recommended — anything smaller struggles above 4,500 metres. Service your bike completely 2 weeks before departure.
