Best weekend trips from Chennai (2025)

Chennai's coastal location and central position in South India makes it a great base for weekend travel. Beaches, hill stations, temple towns, and colonial heritage are all within reach.

Top destinations

Pondicherry — 160 km, 2.5 hours

Chennai's most popular weekend escape. French colonial White Town, Promenade Beach, Auroville ashram, excellent French-Tamil cuisine, and craft beer pubs (Alliance Française serves wine!). Budget: ₹2,500–₹6,000/day. One of India's most Instagram-friendly destinations. Drive via ECR (East Coast Road) for a scenic coastal approach.

Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram) — 60 km, 1.5 hours

UNESCO World Heritage Site with 7th-century Pallava shore temples and rock-cut cave temples. Combine with Crocodile Bank (breeding centre) and ECR beach shacks. Perfect for a day trip or one-night stay. Very affordable — good food at beach shacks for ₹150–₹300 per meal.

Yercaud — 340 km, 5 hours

Salem's hill station at 1,515 m — the poor man's Ooty but genuinely charming. Coffee and orange estates, Shevaroy Hills, Yercaud Lake, and botanical garden. Much less crowded than Ooty. Budget-friendly accommodation.

Tirupati — 135 km, 2.5 hours

India's richest temple and one of the world's most visited religious sites. Tirumala Venkateswara Temple darshan needs advance booking (tirupati.ap.gov.in) — book Special Entry Darshan tickets 2–3 months ahead. Combined with Chandragiri Fort and ISKCON temple. Accommodation (dormitories to cottages) managed by TTD.

Vellore Fort and CMC — 140 km, 2.5 hours

Vellore's 16th-century fort is outstanding. Christian Medical College is adjacent — if you're combining a hospital visit with sightseeing. Golden Temple (Sri Narayani Peedam) is 10 km from Vellore — architecturally stunning and less crowded than Tirupati.
