Best weekend trips from Mumbai (2025)

Mumbai's geography gives it excellent weekend travel options — the Sahyadri mountains, Konkan coast, and Deccan plateau are all within 4 hours. Here are the best options by interest.

Top destinations

Lonavala — 80 km, 1.5 hours

Mumbai's most accessible hill escape. Lohagad Fort, Bhushi Dam (monsoon only), Tiger's Leap viewpoint, and the famous chikki (sweet). Gets extremely crowded during monsoon (June–September) when the waterfalls are active. Visit midweek for a peaceful experience. Cable car to Rajmachi Point for valley views.

Alibaug — 100 km by road, 1 hour by ferry

Konkan's beach town. Kolaba Fort accessible at low tide, clean beaches (Mandwa, Kihim, Nagaon), good seafood. Take the ferry from Gateway of India (1 hour vs 3 hour drive in weekend traffic). Very popular — book restaurants and accommodation in advance. Best October–February.

Mahabaleshwar — 260 km, 4.5 hours

Maharashtra's premier hill station. Famous for strawberries (January–May), Valley of Flowers, Pratapgad Fort (Shivaji's historic victory). Venna Lake boating. Old Mahabaleshwar has colonial-era viewpoints. Avoid May and June holidays — extremely crowded. Best October–January.

Nashik — 180 km, 3 hours

India's wine capital and one of the Kumbh Mela cities. Sula Vineyards wine tasting and vineyard stay is outstanding. Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga temple. Ramkund Ghat. Close to Igatpuri for trekking (Kalsubai — Maharashtra's highest peak). Combines spirituality, wine, and nature.

Aurangabad — 340 km, 5 hours

UNESCO World Heritage double — Ajanta Caves (Buddhist cave art, 2nd century BC) and Ellora Caves (Hindu, Buddhist, Jain caves, 5th–11th century). Bibi Ka Maqbara (Taj Mahal of Deccan). Cannot be done in one day — plan 2 nights minimum. Overnight bus or train from Mumbai makes logistics easier.
