Why annual health checkups matter — and why most Indians skip them

Heart disease, diabetes, and thyroid disorders affect 1 in 4 urban Indian adults. Most are silent until they aren't. An annual full-body checkup costs less than a single restaurant meal for two — but catches 80% of common issues at a treatable stage.

India's diagnostic market is dominated by 6 labs: Thyrocare, Lal PathLabs, Apollo Diagnostics, Metropolis, SRL, and Healthians. Pricing varies dramatically — the same 70-test panel ranges from ₹999 to ₹2,499 depending on lab. We've compared the most popular packages below.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I get a full-body checkup?

Annually if you're 30+, or every 6 months if you have any chronic condition (diabetes, hypertension, thyroid). Under 30 with no symptoms — once every 2 years is enough.

Are home-collection samples reliable?

Yes — phlebotomists are trained, samples go to the same accredited labs as in-clinic samples. Results are identical. Always confirm the lab is NABL-accredited.

Do I need to fast?

For lipid profile and fasting glucose: 10-12 hours. Most full-body packages require fasting. Schedule the home pickup for 7-8 AM and have a normal dinner the night before.

What's the difference between NABL and CAP accreditation?

NABL is India's national lab accreditation (mandatory). CAP (College of American Pathologists) is an international gold-standard. Top labs (Lal PathLabs, Metropolis) hold both.

Can I claim this on health insurance?

Many corporate health policies and select retail health insurance plans (Star, Niva Bupa) reimburse one annual checkup. Check your policy. Section 80D allows ₹5,000 deduction for preventive health checkup expenses regardless.
