Rooftop Solar in India

Compare top installers and calculate exact subsidy under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Most homes recover cost in 5-7 years and earn free power for 25.

Why solar makes sense in India in 2025

Indian electricity tariffs rose 7-10% per year for the last decade. A typical 3 kW rooftop solar system in a Tier-1 city costs ₹1.8-2.2 lakh after subsidy, generates 12-15 units/day (4,000+ units/year), and pays back in 5-7 years. After that — 20+ years of free electricity.

The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (launched Feb 2024) gives ₹30,000 subsidy for 1 kW, ₹60,000 for 2 kW, ₹78,000 for 3 kW or above. State subsidies (e.g. Tamil Nadu adds another ₹20,000) often stack. Net metering means surplus power feeds back to the grid — your meter literally runs backward.

Frequently asked questions

How do I apply for the PM Surya Ghar subsidy?

Register at pmsuryaghar.gov.in with your DISCOM consumer number. Choose a registered installer from your state's list. Subsidy is credited directly to your bank account 30 days after installation + DISCOM inspection.

How much roof space do I need?

Roughly 100 sq ft per kW. A 3 kW system needs ~300 sq ft of unshaded roof. South-facing roof at ~15° tilt is ideal in India.

What about cloudy days and monsoon?

Output drops 50-70% during monsoon. But annual generation is what matters — a 3 kW system across India averages 1,400 kWh/year per kW (Rajasthan touches 1,600; Kerala/Bengal lower). Net metering means you bank surplus from sunny months for the cloudy months.

On-grid vs off-grid vs hybrid?

On-grid (no battery, sells excess to grid) is cheapest and most popular — ~80% of Indian rooftop installs. Off-grid (with battery, no grid connection) costs 2-3× more, only justified in remote areas. Hybrid (battery + grid) costs 1.5-2×, useful in places with frequent power cuts.

Maintenance costs?

Minimal. Clean panels every 1-3 months (water spray); ₹500-1,500/year for AMC if you outsource. Inverter typically lasts 8-12 years before replacement (₹15-30k).
