Best Water Purifier in India (2026): How to Choose by Your Water

The single most important fact about buying a water purifier in India: the right one depends on your water, not on which brand advertises hardest. Spend ₹100 on a TDS meter first — it tells you whether you need RO at all, and can save you thousands on a machine you don't.

Start here: test your tap water's TDS (total dissolved solids, in ppm) with a cheap handheld meter. That one number decides whether you need RO, UV, UF, or a combination — everything below flows from it.

RO vs UV vs UF — what each actually does

TypeRemovesNeeds power?Best when
RO (Reverse Osmosis)Dissolved salts — lowers TDS, heavy metalsYesHigh-TDS / hard / borewell / tanker water
UV (Ultraviolet)Bacteria & viruses (doesn't change TDS)YesMicrobially unsafe but low-TDS water
UF (Ultrafiltration)Suspended particles, cysts, bacteriaNoLow-TDS municipal water, or no-electricity use

Most branded units combine these — RO+UV+UF for the toughest water. The mistake to avoid is buying RO when you don't need it: on already-soft water, RO strips useful minerals and wastes litres per glass.

Which type do you actually need?

Your water (TDS)What to buy
Above 500 ppm
(borewell, tanker, hard water)
RO, ideally RO+UV with a TDS controller / mineraliser. This is most of India. See our hard-water deep-dive.
200–500 ppm
(mixed supply)
RO with a mineraliser (keeps taste), or a good UV+UF if it's on the lower end. Add UV if the water is microbially suspect.
Under 200 ppm
(treated municipal, soft water)
UV+UF — skip RO. It's already low-TDS; RO would waste water and over-purify. UV handles any pipe-borne bugs.
Safe supply, no power / tight budgetA gravity UF (non-electric) purifier — cheapest safe option for already-potable municipal water.

Best overall · high-TDS families

Kent Grand Plus (RO+UV+UF + TDS controller)

~8 L storage · typical ₹15,000–19,000 · filters ~₹3,500–4,500/yr

The default for hard/borewell water. The TDS controller keeps some healthy minerals instead of over-stripping, and 8 litres suits a family of 5–6. Widely serviced. If your TDS is high, this is the safe pick.

Best mineral balance · service reach

Aquaguard Marvel / Aura NXT (RO+UV, mineral guard)

~7–8 L · typical ₹15,000–18,000 · Eureka Forbes service network

Adds minerals back after RO for better taste, and Eureka Forbes has arguably the widest technician network in India — worth a lot in smaller cities where service matters more than specs.

Best value RO

Livpure Glitz (RO+UV+UF + mineraliser)

~7 L · typical ₹11,000–13,000 · filters ~₹2,800–3,600/yr

Gives you the full RO+UV+UF+mineraliser stack for noticeably less than Kent/Aquaguard. Service is solid in tier-1/2 cities. The value pick if your water needs RO but your budget is tight.

Best for low water waste · premium

AO Smith (Z-series, advanced water recovery)

typical ₹22,000–34,000 · recovers more reject water than standard RO

Premium build and, importantly, recovery technology that wastes far less water than the usual 3-to-1 RO ratio. Worth it if water conservation (or a high water bill) matters and the budget allows.

Low-TDS municipal · no RO needed

A UV / UV+UF unit (e.g. Aquaguard or AO Smith UV)

typical ₹10,000–18,000 · no TDS reduction, no RO water waste

If your TDS is already under ~200 ppm, buy UV (or UV+UF) — not RO. You get safe, bacteria-free water without wasting litres or stripping minerals. Don't let a salesperson upsell RO you don't need.

Cheapest safe option · non-electric

Gravity UF purifier (e.g. Pureit Classic / Kent Gold)

typical ₹2,000–4,000 · no electricity, no running water needed

For already-potable municipal water, a gravity purifier removes particles, cysts and bacteria for a fraction of the cost — no power, no plumbing. A sensible pick for low-TDS supply, rentals, or a backup.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need an RO purifier?

Only if your TDS is high. Test it first. Over ~500 ppm (common with borewell/tanker water) you need RO; under ~200 ppm (treated municipal supply) RO is unnecessary — UV or UV+UF is enough, and RO just wastes water and strips minerals.

What's the difference between RO, UV and UF?

RO lowers TDS (dissolved salts); UV kills bacteria and viruses without changing TDS; UF removes particles and cysts with no electricity. Hard, unsafe water often needs RO+UV+UF together; clean low-TDS water needs only UV or UF.

What TDS level is safe to drink?

BIS treats up to 500 mg/L as acceptable, and 50–150 ppm usually tastes best. Below 50 is over-purified; above 500 is where RO earns its place. A ₹100–200 TDS meter tells you yours.

What does it cost to run?

Filters cost roughly ₹3,000–5,500 a year for an RO unit, plus any annual maintenance contract. RO also wastes water unless the model has recovery technology — factor both into the true cost.
