India Salary Index 2026
Realistic CTC benchmarks for Indian professionals across tech, finance, healthcare, design, and consulting — broken down by role, experience, and city. The honest salary map for the 2026 job market.
Snapshot
Indian salary growth has accelerated significantly post-pandemic. Tech compensation has roughly doubled in the past 6 years for senior roles. Finance and consulting have grown more modestly. Healthcare has lagged — doctor compensation in India remains structurally low relative to international peers despite 10+ years of training. The big gap in 2026 isn't between sectors — it's between metro and tier-2 cities for the same role.

City multipliers — same role, different city
The same role at the same experience pays different across Indian cities. Here is the relative multiplier vs Bangalore baseline (1.0x) for a typical 5-year tech professional:
| City | Multiplier | Effective 5-yr tech salary |
|---|---|---|
| Bangalore | 1.00x | Rs 18 lakh (baseline) |
| Hyderabad | 0.95x | Rs 17 lakh (matches Bangalore for senior) |
| Mumbai | 0.92x | Rs 16.5 lakh (finance roles can be 1.5x) |
| Delhi NCR (Gurgaon) | 0.90x | Rs 16 lakh |
| Pune | 0.85x | Rs 15 lakh |
| Chennai | 0.82x | Rs 14.5 lakh |
| Kolkata | 0.70x | Rs 12.5 lakh |
| Tier-2 (Indore, Coimbatore, Lucknow, Jaipur) | 0.55-0.65x | Rs 10-12 lakh |
| Remote (US client, India based) | 1.5-2.5x | Rs 27-45 lakh |
Key takeaways for 2026
- Services-to-product transition is the single biggest career-stage compensation jump. Same skill, same years, 3-5x salary. Years 2-5 of your tech career are when this transition is most achievable.
- Healthcare is structurally underpaid relative to training time. 10+ years of MBBS + MD + fellowship pays comparable to a 3-year IT product engineer. Surgeon private practice is the only way to break out — and it takes 15+ years.
- Remote roles for foreign clients are the new top-tier compensation tier. 1.5-2.5x Bangalore equivalent for similar work. Senior tech and design roles globally remote are the highest-paid jobs available to Indians without relocation.
- Investment banking remains India's highest-paying entry-level path. Rs 30-45 lakh out of MBA at MBB, Rs 15-25 lakh out of CA at Big 4 IB. But work intensity (80-100 hour weeks) and burnout reality is also worst here.
- Indian salary growth is accelerating but uneven. Tech grew 35% since 2020. Healthcare grew 12%. Banking grew 18%. Pick a sector trajectory, not just a current salary.
- Tier-2 cities offer 35-45% salary discount AND 50-60% cost of living discount. Net real income often higher in tier-2. The "metro premium" is mostly career-trajectory access (more roles available), not actual lifestyle delta.
Methodology
Salary ranges reflect 2026 market data drawn from anonymous compensation surveys (AmbitionBox, Glassdoor, Levels.fyi India, payscale.com), recruiter network reporting, and triangulated through public job board postings. CTC = Cost To Company, the standard Indian compensation metric (includes base + variable + benefits + ESOPs vested value).
"Top company" = top decile of compensation in the role. "Mid-tier" = 30-60th percentile. Numbers exclude one-time signing bonuses, ESOP grants priced at vest, and overtime premium. Variable pay assumed at target.
This is illustrative for negotiation and career planning. Individual offers vary widely by company, team, performance band, and negotiation. Always benchmark with multiple sources and your own network. Read more about WIB methodology at editorial-process.
