Frequently asked questions

What inflation rate should I use for India?

Long-term Indian retail inflation (CPI) averages 6-7%. Use 6.5% as a middle estimate. Healthcare inflation is significantly higher (12-15%) — if you expect heavy medical needs, consider that separately.

What is the 4% withdrawal rule?

The 4% rule (originally from US data) suggests withdrawing 4% of your corpus annually, adjusted for inflation. For India with higher inflation, a 3-3.5% withdrawal is safer to ensure the corpus lasts your full retirement.

Should I include EPF/PPF in retirement planning?

Yes — EPF, PPF, NPS, and gratuity are all part of your retirement corpus. Subtract their estimated maturity value from the "corpus needed" above to get the additional savings you need to build through SIP/other investments.

What is the difference between pre and post-retirement return?

Pre-retirement: while accumulating, you can take more equity risk (10-12% returns). Post-retirement: capital preservation matters more, shift to debt-heavy portfolio (7-9% returns). The calculator uses both rates separately for accurate projection.

How much should I save for retirement?

General rule: save 20-25% of gross income consistently from age 25 onwards. Starting later (35-40) requires 35-50% savings to hit the same goal. Earlier you start, smaller monthly amount needed.
